Economics and politics must not be put in front of each other in the UK's trade talks with the EU, the BBC has been told.

Annie Rennison, head of EU trade policy at the Institute of Directors, told the Today programme: "I'd like to see economics put on the same playing field as politics, rather than saying it's about one or the other.

"On defence and security there is not necessarily a cigarette paper between countries, on economics and trade it's a big foreign policy tool for many."
