The name “refried beans” is actually misleading because the beans have only been fried once. The name is derived from the Spanish phrase for the food—frijoles refritos. “Refritos” means “well fried” or "intensely fried,” not "fried again," so the English version is just a bad translation.

Asked in Legumes

Why is refried beans called refried?

   User Avatar
Be assured that the beans are only fried once. It is being translated from the spanish phrase "frijoles refritos" or well fried beans. While in english the prefix "re" is used when something is done again, in spanish it is used for emphasis. Frijoles are beans and frito means fried. The "re" before frito means the beans are really fried or well fried. It's just a bad translation.
