How long will the footprints on the moon last?

I always see the pictures of them, and they’ve become a symbol of humankind’s greatest accomplishment...but are they as temporary as footprints on Earth? Did they deteriorate soon after the astronauts left?

The footprints on the moon will likely be there for as long as the moon is. Unlike Earth, there’s no liquid water, no volcanic activity, and no weather to speak of on the moon, so aside from the occasional meteorite and solar wind (which takes ages to have an effect), there’s nothing on the moon to mess with the footprints. They’re still there—along with spacecraft, scientific equipment, mementos, bags of human waste, and a lot more.

No definite answer to say. But space is a vacuum that has no friction and disturbances unless collision occurs. Indefinitely forever. Unless if something like comet or asteroid was to impact the moon creating a new crater or something, which is not something impossible, as evidenced from the numbers of craters observed on the moon, these things happen every so often and frequently.

They will probably last as long as the moon is there because there is no wind on the moon.

More than 300 million years since there is no erosion on the moon.

The foot prints will last until ISIS gets a moonride, then ISIS

fighters will walk around scuffing out the footprints left there in order to prove that there is no god but Allah.

The moon has no atmosphere, so no wind can simply 'blow away' the footprints, the only way for them to no-longer exist is by some sort of external force interacting with the print.

The footprints on the moon will be there as long as the moon is there. The footprints would have gone away if there was an outside force affecting them, but because there is no wind, living organism, or other outside force affecting them, then they will still be there.

As long as the moon is still in space, the footprints will still be on the surface.

the footprint on the moon well last billions and billions of years its atmosphere is too weak to blow dust but it has a little atmosphere so it well maybe cover the footprints in billon of years I hope this helped p.s the moon is going farther away from earth every one inch in a year so when its already gone from the earth the footprints well cover so we will not see it then only if we brought dust and do it ourselves

How long will footprints last on the moon and why?

   User Avatar
Footprints will last, possibly, millions of years. There is no air or liquid water on the moon which, on Earth, are the devices of change by erosion. So unless footprints on the moon are disturbed by meteorite impacts, they will remain as the are for millenia.

Asked in The Moon

Why will the footprints left on the moon by Apollo astronauts last forever?

   User Avatar
There is no erosion on the moon surface because there is no wind or water to flow over the landscape. So, the footprints have nothing to disturb them and will remain as long as the moon remains.

Asked in The Moon

Why would footprints on the moon last for hundreds of years?

   User Avatar
The footprints will stay on the moon because there is no weather or atmosphere on the moon! That means that if there is no weather there will be no wind to carry it away or sand to top over the footprints!

Until something disturbs it, like a future meteor impact, or a future moon landing. The footprints left by the astronauts may last millions of years.

Asked in Apollo Moon Missions, The Moon

If a astronaut landed on the moon how long would the footprints stay there and why?

   User Avatar
There were recent amazing pictures released to the press of the surface of the moon which showed many of the objects left on the moon including footprints! So you know the footprints last over 40 years because it has been that long since Neil Armstrong made history with the first footprints on the moon. There is no atmosphere on the moon therefore no rain, wind or water flow so the only thing that will destroy the footprints is space debri of either man made materials or rocks such as a meteor storm. Scientist from different nationsintentionally crash objects into the moon for various studies.

Asked in Apollo Moon Missions, The Moon

What is the reason footprints are on the moon?

   User Avatar
As there is no wind on the moon. The footprints will stay for ages.

Asked in Earth Sciences

Why would footprints made on the moon will last for hundreds of years?

because there is no erosion on the moon because it does not rain

Asked in The Moon

Why would footprints on the moon lat a really long time?

   User Avatar
Because there is no wind on the moon to blow it around.

Asked in Neil Armstrong

How did Neil Armstrong's footprints stay on the moon so long?

   User Avatar
The Moon has no wind, no water, and almost no moon quakes (earthquakes on the moon). There is almost nothing to cause the footprints to go away. Unless they are hit by a meteor, comet, or asteroid.

Asked in The Moon

Why will the footprints on the moon only last ten million years?

   User Avatar
There are Moon Quakes caused by Tidal stresses ( not volcanic activity) which shifts the surface about enough to get rid of them.

Asked in Telescopes, The Moon

Can telescopes see footprints on the moon?

   User Avatar
No. there are no telescopes (not even the orbiting Hubble or even the next generation of orbiting telescopes) that have long enough focal length or high enough resolution to resolve footprints on the Moon.

Asked in The Moon, Gravity

How can there be footprints on the moon with no gravity?

   User Avatar
First wipe your feet and any footprints will be pristine.

Asked in The Moon

Footprints on the moon will never go away?

   User Avatar
Footprints in the moons surface (so in the dust lying on the moon) will never go away because there is no wind on the moon to blow new dust over the footprints.

Asked in The Moon, NASA

How long will a foot print last on the moon?

   User Avatar
We can't be absolutely sure how long a footprint will last on the moon since it might or might not be struck by a meteoroid or other cosmic debris, but potentially it could last for billions of years. It is also possible (although I am not expecting it) that the moon will someday be colonized by people, who will then disturb the existing footprints. But then again, they might want to preserve them as monuments.

Asked in Apollo Moon Missions, Neil Armstrong, The Moon

Why are the footprints of astronauts who walked on the moon in 1969 are still there today?

   User Avatar
Because the moon has no atmosphere there is no wind or rain to erode the footprints.

They'll be there as long as the moon is. Space is a vacuum, there's nothing there to disturb them.

Whether the footprints of human beings are still present on the Moon?

   User Avatar
Oh yes the footprints left on the moon by the astronauts , will remain there for years or centuries. The reason is that there is no wind on the moon surface. So there is no chance of dust covering those footprints.

Asked in Neil Armstrong, The Moon

How have the footprints of neil Armstrong on the moon when there is no air on it?

Asked in Neil Armstrong, The Moon

Are the footprints of human being are still present on the moon?

   User Avatar
yes, the footprints of human beings are still present on moon. as there is lack of atmosphere on moon, there is no air or water which can vanish or rub the prints there, on the moon.

Asked in Astronomy, Apollo Moon Missions

Why the the footprints by the Apollo astronauts last for centuries on the moon?

   User Avatar
There is no wind or atmosphere on the moon so the dust that it is made in will not be blown away unless it is hit by a meteor or it is destroyed by humans.
