NASA’s Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite acquired these images of vast poppy blooms in the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve on April 14, 2020. These images were taken when the valley’s blooms were thought to be at or near their peak. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve reached peak bloom in mid-April, and NASA's Operational Land Imager caught the spectacle from space.

The orange bloom is seen near the western tip of the Mojave Desert, after Southern California received significant rainfall in March and April.

Lancaster, California, the area photographed, received around 10.5 inches of rain this spring, which is almost 4 inches above normal, NASA reported, which may have caused the poppies to bloom longer than usual. According to park officials, this bloom was an “unexpected” surprise due to the late season rains.

In the slideshow above, visitors can be seen joyfully romping through the wildflower fields, while practicing social distancing and wearing masks. Many parks have restricted visitor access due to COVID-19, but Antelope Valley made the view accessible via livestream, though few poppies are visible this late in the season.
