Streets in the Balboa Peninsula are flooded by coastal tides and high surf in Newport Beach, Calif., Friday, July 3, 2020. The combination of surf and high tides could produce minor coastal flooding at the lowest coastal locations in the evenings during high tide this holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Newport Beach, California, was cleaning up Saturday after flooding caused by coastal tides and high surf covered beaches and roads with water.

The flooding sent ocean water into streets Friday night and destroyed a 40-foot sailboat, KSWB-TV reported.

Traffic leaving the Balboa Peninsula was backed up for hours at the start of the holiday weekend.

The city was assessing possible damage to homes.

“I think it’s safe to say there has been some property damage, we don’t know the full extent,” Newport Beach city spokesperson John Pope told the Orange County Register. “The city is still assessing some of the damage. There’s sand and trash just littered everywhere.”

Newport Beach Mayor Will O'Neill posted photos of cars driving through floodwaters and beaches covered with water. Several people had to be rescued in high surf, O'Neill said. Video showed large waves breaking on the coast.

Marine Safety Chief Mike Halphide and other lifeguards were responding to the flooding Friday night when they saw a sailboat headed to shore. They were weighing whether to try to tow the boat out to sea when it broke up and started to sink.

“It went from being this beautiful 40-foot sailboat to a pile of debris," Halphide told the Register. "We tried to secure the scene as much as possible, that’s something we’ll have to take care of today."

The people on board made it safely to shore, and a dog on board was rescued by others on the beach and watched over it while the owners were checked for injuries.

“The bystanders were able to collect him and kept him until owners were treated and released,” Halphide said.

The beach was closed Saturday due to coronavirus restrictions, giving crews time to clean up. They pushed mud and sand off a parking lot and reinforced a sandy berm wall to brace against more flooding that was expected with Saturday's high tide, according to the Register.

The National Weather Service also issued a coastal flood advisory for low lying areas in Orange County on Saturday.
